Menopause Moves
Herbs to help you through the menopause
Around the time of the menopause our hormones can start to go haywire due to falling levels of oestrogen. Symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and depression all of which can make life a misery. Many women resort to hormone replacement therapy, but it is not the only answer. A more natural approach is to take some herbs to bring relief to symptoms.
ST JOHN’S WORT
Sometimes known as the sunshine herb, this supplement can help to lift your mood on those days that nothing seems to be right. It is also helpful if your suffering from mid-life fatigue and can give a boost to low libido. Several randomised controlled trials have also shown benefit in using St John’s wort for reducing the severity and frequency of hot flushes.
Remember St John’s wort may interact with several medicines, such as anti-viral drugs used in HIV treatment, immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclosporin, oral contraceptives and conventional depression treatments. Talk to your GP if you are also taking prescribed medicines.
BLACK COHOSH
Studies show that this herb may help to bring down levels of LH (luteinising hormone), which helps to normalise oestrogen-progesterone balance. It also has an affect on dilation of blood vessels and can help to bring relief to hot flushes, night sweats, low libido, anxiety and mood swings.
SAGE
Several studies also show that this lovely garden herb can help reduce night sweats in as little as two weeks. If you don’t want to take a supplement simply pour boiling water over two to four tablespoons of chopped sage leaves and drink as a tea.
AGNUS CASTUS
Although often used for menstrual problems, this herb has hormone- regulating properties and may help if you are suffering from hot flushes or mood swings.
