Got the sniffles? Try pelargonium

A recent report by the internationally renowned, independent Cochrane Collaboration adds further weight to the growing popularity of pelargonium.

The Cochrane Collaboration analysed eight randomised, double-blind, clinical studies, and found that standardised pelargonium sidoides extract EPs® 7630 may be effective in alleviating symptoms of acute rhinosinusitis and the common cold in adults.

Dr Michael Dixon, GP and Chairman of NHS Alliance comments: ‘Acute respiratory tract infections are the most common acute illnesses encountered in daily medical practice and are the most frequent reason for absence from school or work. In most cases antibiotics are of no use in treating such viruses, and there isn’t much we can do. A standardised pelargonium extract for respiratory infections such as colds, offers healthcare professionals and sufferers alike an alternative to antibiotics that they know is both safe and produced to a consistent high standard.’

These new Cochrane Collaboration findings add weight to another meta-analysis published earlier this year. That review by a research group at the University of Exeter (UK) led by Prof. Ernst looked in great detail into the clinical evidence for the treatment of acute bronchitis with Pelargonium sidoides extract EPs® 7630. They found that ‘there is encouraging evidence from currently available data that is an effective treatment of acute bronchitis.’
