Menopause Misery
I am 49 and my periods are going haywire. I am also waking up in the middle of the night all hot and bothered. Could this be the start of the menopause and if it is are there any supplements that might help?

The menopause is a likely cause of your symptoms, and your doctor can confirm this with a hormone blood test. Urine test kits are also available over-the-counter. Oestrogen-like plant hormones can improve hormone balance so, as well as eating more fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, consider taking an isoflavone supplement.
Evening primrose oil also provides building blocks that may improve hormone balance, and skin quality. Black Cohosh root extracts help to relive menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and temporary changes in mood.
Avoid hot spicy foods and excess alcohol which can trigger flushing. Drink an extra pint of milk per day for calcium to help protect against bone thinning. Limit your intake of sugar, salt, tea, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, drink more water, and take regular exercise. If you smoke, do your utmost to stop. Finally, avoid excess stress which lowers oestrogen levels - find time for relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation and yoga.
