OMEGA 3’S FOUND TO HELP HEART FUNCTION AFTER A HEART ATTACK

After a heart attack the heart’s shape and function can change, which over time can lead to heart failure. And now US research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish, such as herring, mackerel and salmon could help prevent this.

The OMEGA-REMODEL study of 300 heart attack survivors found that taking a daily high-dose of omega-3s from fish oil for six months improved the function of the heart and reduced scarring compared to placebo.

GINKGO BILOBA HAS POSITIVE BENEFITS FOR COGNITION

Research into the benefits of ginkgo biloba for cognitive impairment and dementia gets better and better. In a recent overview of 28 trials covering 2,608 patients and published in the journal Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry, ginkgo biloba was found to have potential benefits in improving cognitive function; improvements were seen in managing day-to-day activities and other aspects of cognition in patients with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s.

TIP OF THE MONTH: GINGER CAN HELP MORNING SICKNESS

Morning sickness can make the early days of pregnancy a misery. But now according to new guidelines from the Royal College of Obstetricians help is at hand for those with mild symptoms who want to avoid taking drugs. Eating raw ginger or ginger biscuits has been found to reduce the feelings of sickness. Acupressure (wearing a bracelet that applies pressure at certain points) may also help to soothe symptoms.
